			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Friends, Studio 8 has had a tough season this year. After many of years operating and just breaking even, and many unfortunate setbacks and disappointments, we had hoped this year would mark a turn around. Unfortunately it has been our worst season ever, and we simply can&#8217;t afford to put any more of our financial resources into keeping the studio open. We will be closing the studio the last week of May, 2012.</p>
<p>Surely I&#8217;m disappointed, our students are fantastic, and I have had a great time watching everyone progress, including me. Closing the studio wasn&#8217;t an easy decision to reach.</p>
<p>Of course it&#8217;s not a huge surprise, the yoga climate in Helsinki has become very competitive, and with my un-conventional take on yoga, it&#8217;s only natural Studio 8 would be the first to fall. From where I stand I&#8217;m trying to present a rational picture of yoga and physical culture based on years and years of practice, study, and talking to some very great minds in the field. What I see outside, frankly often appears as the blind leading the blind, but that&#8217;s the nature of what the industry has become.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not giving up on teaching, I love what I do and think it has value, and am very thankful for the students who have stuck it out through all the twists and turns Studio 8 has taken over the years. We know it&#8217;s something special.</p>
<p>I will do my best to keep teaching in some way, though the future isn&#8217;t clear yet, there are numerous possibilities, and I&#8217;m open to suggestions. I recommend people sign up for the newsletter both here (scroll to the bottom of the page) and at <a title="yoga horizons" href="http://yoga-horizons.com/" target="_blank">yoga-horizons.com</a> and that way I can keep those interested informed. Of course if you&#8217;re not interested any more, simply clink the unsubscribe link next time the newsletter comes, no hard feelings.</p>
<p>There is a big picture I have in mind, but frankly am not sure how to get there. No matter, the current Studio 8 facility wasn&#8217;t working on a number of levels. Hopefully this change will prompt us to build something that can work, is sustainable, and healthy for all involved. In the meantime we will have to improvise.</p>

<p>Having spent twenty plus years with both Iyengar and Astanga yoga, I found it was time to reassess about five years ago. This led me to discover many wonderful forms of practice which in many cases made more sense to me.</p>

<p>Balancing poses have the reputation of being only for advanced students, yet those who work on even the simplest variations know the joy they bring. Studio 8 is lucky to have a master student of the art of hand-balancing, Mikael Kristiansen, give a workshop which will develop the &#8216;fun&#8217;-damentals of building a handstand practice. The workshop will cover both theory, progression and practice, and hopefully a small demonstration of Mikael&#8217;s amazing talents.</p>

<blockquote><p>Hello, my name is Mikael Kristiansen, and I am a student at the national circus program in Stockholm, specializing in handbalancing.</p>
<p>The classes will be for those on all levels, and focusing on the fundamentals and progressions which build up to the more advanced balances.</p>
<p>Proper hand-spotting, and different key exercises for alignment, balance and strength, as well as 1 arm work will be covered.</p>

<p><em>This course is for anyone interested in fitness and strength training with Indian clubs or simply wanting to know more about Indian Club Swinging as an activity.</em></p>
<p><strong>The course will include:</strong></p>

<p>Warming up for and with Indian clubs, pendulums, circles, hand changes, basic heart shaped swings (single handed and with both hands) and combinations.</p>
<p>The British Military style of Indian club swinging will be taught. This style is characterised by big open swings and circles and is generally a light weight club style. Heavier clubs can be used once the basic movements are understood and progress can be made with either heavier clubs, increased speed of swinging, increased complexity of movements and combinations. Some squats and lunges with clubs will also be shown to illustrate how overall body strength and conditioning can be achieved with Indian clubs.</p>
<p>Coaching on specific points will be given and video may be recorded and used to illustrate various points.</p>
<p>Studio 8 will provide one pound indian clubs for use during the workshop. Other weights will be available to experiment with.</p>

Our goal being that students continue taking classes with us so that they actually have time to learn the skills and methods we teach. This simply can&#8217;t be done in weekend.</p>
<p><em><strong>So if you want to get started all  you have to do is come to the class that sounds interesting to  you.</strong></em></p>

<p>However, our BIG PICTURE is trying to build a somewhat comprehensive program that involves</p>
<p>1) Mobility, Flexibility, Coordination, Internal Awareness (Yoga and Movement Classes)</p>
<p>2) Strength and Healthy Muscles and Joints within a large range of movements, External Awareness (Yoga Strength)</p>
<p>3) Applied Strength and Mobility, teamwork, with some restorative work and fun thrown in. (Om Acrobatics)</p>
<p>We encourage new students to try out all our offerings, though they may find a particular class that suits them best and that&#8217;s ok too.</p>
<p>We also offer Pilates style classes (Body Flow, Pilates) and as far as i know Studio 8 is the only place in Finland teaching the ancient and fun art of Indian Club Turning (Healthy Shoulders) All are also suitable for beginners to drop in and check out.</p>
<p>The only class that isn&#8217;t a good choice unless you already have a yoga or bodyweight strength practice established is Yoga Gym, so we recommend that most people wait on that one.</p>
